About the role  

 

The Assistant Accountant plays a critical role in the financial operations of the organisation, applying advanced analytical and systems knowledge to manage complex income allocations, multi-system reconciliations, and financial reporting across diverse business portfolios.  

 

Responsibilities include processing and ensuring the accuracy of government funding, childcare subsidies, and direct debit transactions; overseeing general ledger integrity through reconciliations, depreciation calculations, and fixed asset register management; and participating in budgeting and forecasting functions.  

 

The role also involves streamlining accounts payable processes through automation and performance monitoring, maintaining compliance with internal policies, and contributing to month-end close activities with a focus on efficient timeliness and precision. By leveraging multiple ERP platforms, the accountant ensures financial data is both actionable and compliant with accounting standards. 

 

Key Accountabilities: 

 

  • Perform bank reconciliations and weekly cashflow reporting. 
  • Assist in preparation of month end and year end accounts. 
  • Reconciliation of general ledger and balance sheet accounts., depreciation and clearing accounts reconciled monthly. 
  • Processing of accruals, prepayments, and subsequent journals. 
  • Extraction and reconciliation of reports from sub systems and prepare and post revenue, stock and expense standing and reversing journals. 
  • Verify, allocate, post, and reconcile accounts payable and receivable. 
  • Assisting with fixed asset register and other business schedules. 
  • Managing lease schedules and preparation of associated journals. 
  • Managing intercompany transactions in bank and trial balance. 
  • Lodgement of ABS returns. 

 

Key Competencies and Skills 

 

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in an Assistant Accounting role or similar. 
  • Demonstrated advanced capability in computer software and accounting packages user skills including advanced MS Excel skills, particularly with the ability to create large Excel workpapers that are clearly structured and automated, as well as use more advanced formulas such as INDEX-MATCH, OFFSET, UNIQUE, IF-AND/OR, etc. 
  • Educational background and work experience in finance or investments is preferred, to report on and help manage our diversified investment portfolio. Ability to calculate portfolio returns, benchmark comparison with market returns, and provide dashboard analysis to CFO for investment recommendations 
  • Experience with statistical packages such as MySQL, MATLAB and R  
  • Advanced financial modelling and forecasting skills, to help the FP&A team with Cash Flow forecasting, budgeting, 3-statement financial modelling, and Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) valuations. 
  • Proficiency with the following systems would be highly considered: Business Central, Solver, Great Plains, Links, PerfectGym, Continia, VenueLife, iClassPro, XAP, Workplace, Management Reporter, Enrollsy, and Intrac  
  • Experience in financial system migrations and system integration development to help with our financial technology modernisation projects pipeline 
  • Excellent time management skills to manage multiple competing deadlines and priorities 

 

Qualifications 

 

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Accounting and excellent grades (degree with Honours or similar) 
  • Educational background and work experience in finance or investments is preferred
